References and sources

Where the agent's answer came from and how to check the exact passage behind it.

When the Agent answers from Collections, the answer ends with a References block pointing to the documents used.

That is what separates a verifiable answer from a plausible one. Checking the reference takes a few seconds and settles most doubts about reliability.

Open a fragment

Clicking a reference opens the Document fragments panel, with the passages from that document that search considered relevant to your question.

The panel shows the file name, how many fragments were found and a relevance score. The score comes from the search engine, not from an assessment of correctness: a high-scoring fragment is the one most similar to the question, not necessarily the one that contains the right answer.

How to read the result

Three situations, and what each one indicates:

  • The answer cites a passage that checks out: the path worked end to end.
  • The answer cites a passage that doesn't support what was said: the model extrapolated. Record it as a bad response.
  • There is no References block: the Agent answered without looking up any document.

When there are no references

The missing block has three possible causes, in order of frequency:

  1. The Agent has no Collections attached. Confirm it on the Collections tab of the information panel.
  2. The documents aren't ready yet. Documents being extracted or indexed don't take part in answers.
  3. Search found nothing relevant. The question uses terms that don't appear in the documents.

An Agent without Collections answers anyway, using what the model learned in training. The answer looks the same, it just has no references. This is the case where it's most worth checking before acting.

Help search find it

Search compares the content of the question with the content of the documents, not with titles or file names.

Asking with the terms that appear inside the document works better than naming it. "What is the reimbursement deadline for travel expenses" finds more than "what does the expense policy say".
